Dermal fillers and injectables are used to reduce signs of aging and help the face look fresher and more youthful. Dermal fillers are placed under the skin to “fill in” areas where wrinkles, folds, or volume loss have happened due to aging. While the FDA approves most fillers for treating lines like nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth corners), doctors can also use them for other areas. These fillers have changed how we treat deeper facial wrinkles, especially in places where other methods, like Botox, don’t work as well.
What Causes Facial Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but other factors also play a role:
• Strong facial muscles: These can create deep lines or furrows.
• Sun exposure or smoking: Both can cause fine lines to form.
• Genetics: Some people are more likely to develop wrinkles earlier than others.
• Loss of facial volume: Over time, losing volume in the face can lead to more wrinkles.
Where Dermal Fillers Can Help
Dermal fillers work on static wrinkles, which are caused by gravity and the skin losing elasticity. These wrinkles usually appear in the lower parts of the face. Common areas treated include:
• Nasolabial folds: Lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth.
• Marionette lines: Lines running from the corners of the mouth to the chin.
• Smoker’s lines: Wrinkles around the lips.
• Cheeks: Loss of fat can cause hollows in the cheeks.
At our clinic, we use safe, reversible fillers like Restylane™ and Juvederm™ to:
• Smooth the tear trough (hollow area between the eyes and cheeks).
• Improve nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
• Add volume to thin lips.
• Fill hollows in the temples.
• Help hide scars.
• Address other areas based on your unique needs.
Types of Dermal Fillers
There are many types of fillers, and each works best for specific needs. During your consultation, we’ll recommend the one that fits your goals.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most commonly used in the U.S. HA is a natural substance in the body, so it’s safe and doesn’t cause allergic reactions. It provides natural-looking results, lasts 9–24 months, and can even last longer with repeat treatments. Many of these fillers contain lidocaine, which helps reduce discomfort during treatment.
Examples of hyaluronic acid fillers:
• Restylane™
• Juvederm™ (including Volbella®, Vollure®, Voluma®, Ultra®, and Ultra Plus®)
• RHA® Collection
The RHA® Collection
The RHA® Collection is a new type of hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA for treating dynamic wrinkles and folds (lines that show when you move your face). It is designed to mimic your skin’s natural structure, giving long-lasting, natural-looking results for up to 15 months.
Other Filler Options
Some fillers use different materials for specific needs:
• Radiesse™: A filler made from hydroxyapatite, lasting 12–18 months. It works well for deep lines like nasolabial folds, marionette lines, or cheek enhancement.
Dermal fillers are a great option for restoring volume, softening wrinkles, and achieving a natural, youthful appearance. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose the best filler to meet your goals.
