Dr. Kristina Derrick – Pediatric & Cosmetic Dermatology

What is a pediatric dermatologist?

Dr. Derrick is a member of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, and this is SPD’s description:

A pediatric dermatologist cares for children (newborns through adolescents) with skin disorders. Pediatric dermatologists treat children in the outpatient clinic setting, but may also care for hospitalized patients. Many perform surgical procedures such as laser therapy and cutaneous surgery. Pediatric dermatologists diagnose a wide variety of skin disorders including birthmarks (vascular and pigmented), skin infections, dermatitis (atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis), melanocytic nevi (moles), genodermatoses (inherited skin disorders), acneiform eruptions, rare forms of skin cancer, drug eruptions, viral exanthems, and collagen vascular disorders.

Education

• Pediatrics residency at the University of California Davis in Sacramento, CA

• Dermatology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY, where she served as chief resident

• Pediatric dermatology fellowship (post-residency) at SUNY Downstate – only post-residency

• Fellowship-trained physicians are eligible to take the board certification exam in Pediatric

• Dermatology, and only about 15-20 in all of North America complete this fellowship per year. In Dr. Derrick’s year, she was the only one in New York and New Jersey.

• Pediatric dermatology clinical research fellowship at SUNY Downstate where she treated skin conditions in pediatric patients in the clinic and was a sub-investigator and coordinator of pharmaceutical trials and other research

• Bachelor of Arts in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University

• Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from John Hopkins School of Public Health

• Additional courses in facial injections (fillers and neuromodulators), nail procedures, patch testing, innovative suture techniques

• During her dermatology training in Brooklyn, which included the Brooklyn VeteransAffairs Hospital, she became an expert in treating a variety of skin conditions in patients with light skin and dark skin

• Developed modules for the American Academy of Dermatology’s Skin of Color curriculum for pediatric dermatology

• Worked with former fashion photographer Rick Guidotti, whose non-profit organization, Positive Exposure, makes videos to highlight skin and other conditions in a positive way while providing education to medical students and the public

• University of Nebraska College of Medicine Early Career Achievement Award

• SUNY Downstate Resident Advocate Award

• Mark Husk Pediatric Research Award

• Certificate of Courage award for her work voluntarily staffing the COVID wards at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, in March-May of 2020 in the early part of the COVID pandemic
